Governor Mike Dunleavy has declared October 2023 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Alaska, bringing attention to a pervasive issue that affects communities across the state. In his proclamation, Governor Dunleavy stated, "Governor Mike Dunleavy has proclaimed October 2023 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Alaska."

The statistics surrounding domestic violence are alarming. Approximately one in four women and one in seven men in the United States have been victims of domestic violence. Additionally, over 15.5 million children are exposed to domestic violence every year. In Alaska, the numbers are equally concerning. One in three adult women in the state have been victims of stalking in their lifetime, and one in nine Alaskan women aged 60 or older experienced psychological or physical abuse in the past year.

To combat domestic violence, communities across Alaska are taking action. Prevention teams are being formed, and projects such as Green Dot AK, Girls on the Run, and Coaching Boys into Men are being implemented. These initiatives aim to stop domestic violence and create a safer future for Alaskans. By standing firmly against domestic violence through both words and actions, Alaskans can foster strong partnerships among various community groups, businesses, and organizations rooted in government, education, and faith.

It is crucial to recognize that the right to safety extends beyond the designated Domestic Violence Awareness Month. All Alaskans have the right to be safe in their homes and communities every month. If you or someone you know is being harmed, there are resources available for emergency crisis and intervention. You can call Alaska's CARELINE at 877-266-4357 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.

Governor Dunleavy's proclamation serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing domestic violence and working towards a society free from abuse. By raising awareness and taking action, Alaskans can make a significant impact in the fight against domestic violence.
