The City of Kotzebue would like to inform the public that a utility rate study is underway. During this time the city council has voted to increase utility bills by $2.50 per month to adjust to the increase in cost of living. The total utility bill will be $160/ month starting December 2023.

•What does my utility bill cover?The city utility bill covers water, sewer, and garbage.
•Why is my utility bill increasing monthly? The city has been operating on a cash deficit of more than $1,000,000.00 annually to provide water, sewer, and garbage to all residents. The city council passed a resolution after months of discussion to ensure that expenses can be covered. Resolution 22-45.
•What should I expect when it comes to my utility bill? The approved resolution (22-45) will increase the utility bill by $2.50 each month. In December of 2023 the total utility bill will be $160 each month. This is a $30 dollar a year increase per household.
•Who do I contact about my utility bill?Please contact City Hall at 907-442-3401. The public is also encouraged to attend the city council meetings held every third Thursday each month starting at 5:15PM. To submit a public comment, please dial 1-800-315-6338, passcode 49401# during the scheduled time.
•When was the last time my bill increased?The last time the city increased utility bills was in 2016. Cost of living, including the rise in gas prices, have increased more than 30% since the last adjustment.
•Will this be a permanent change?The City of Kotzebue is currently doing a rate study to adjust the utility rate. This rate can change depending on what the rate study determines the cost to be. This change will have to be voted on by the Kotzebue City Council.
