The City of Kotzebue would like to inform all residents that the new water plant is making safe drinking water. The water may be discolored due to the presence of manganese, a mineral similar to iron and found with iron in water sources. While the new water plant is successfully removing all of the iron in the water from Devil’s Lake, it is only removing about half of the manganese. This mineral, like iron, is safe to consume at levels found in natural waters, but can be a nuisance in water systems due the color that it gives the water when it combines with oxygen.  We have been conducting jar tests to determine the best way to improve the process so that we can soon move forward with a solution to remove the color from your water.  We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this issue. For any questions, please contact city hall at 907-442-3401.
