1) What does Black History Month mean to you?“To me, Black History Month means recognizing the perseverance of those before me in the face of racism and prejudice. It is a time to reflect on the incredible actions of people like my grandmother, who came to the U.S. alone from Jamaica in the 90's so she could provide a better life for her children, and later her grandchildren. I would never be such a confident person if it were not for her character as a strong independent woman who successfully achieved the American dream, despite the odds, on her own.”
2) What, if any, adversities have you had to overcome? How did you overcome them and what was the end result?"I've not faced any adversity due to the color of my skin or because of my ethnicity. I recognize that I share some privilege being bi-racial, but also because I am bi-racial my black side is often overlooked. Because of the color of my skin, it is more easily believed that I am more white than I am black. But I am so very proud of my Jamaican heritage, and to overlook that part of me feels like erasing the obstacles my family overcame and the achievements that they earned so that I could have a chance at a successful, healthy life in America."
3) Why did you choose to join the Coast Guard?"I went to college for a year, but it didn't feel like the right time to be in school. I always saw the military as an option because many of my family members joined. I liked that the Coast Guard's big focus was saving lives and keeping people safe."
4) What is your favorite thing about serving in the Coast Guard?"I like that the Coast Guard is just small enough that the things I do or say have tangible outcomes that can impact my unit or even the entire fleet."
5) What is your favorite thing about being stationed in Alaska?"Alaska is wild and beautiful... unlike any other place I've been. And the fishing opportunities are incredible."
6) What advice would you give others who may be considering joining the Coast Guard?"Just remember that the Coast Guard is a sea-going service and getting underway is always a possibility in your future. It may seem scary or daunting. I know it was for me, but I grew to be grateful of choosing to go on a cutter. It will teach you a lot."
