On the evening of February 7, 2022, U.S. Coast Guard helicopter 6036 (CG-6036) launched from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Sitka in response to a mayday call from F/V GLORY, a 40-foot trawler rapidly taking on water with two people on board. The air crew navigated across a rugged terrain through a violent winter storm with tropical storm-force winds to locate F/V GLORY battered by waves against jagged rocks. They fought tirelessly to control the aircraft and avoid 80-foot trees and the vessel’s rigging while conducting hoists to recover both fishermen and the rescue swimmer. After the recovery was complete, they lost all visual references and relied on radar navigation and aeronautical skill to successfully navigate CG-6036 back to Air Station Sitka where emergency services and their families awaited. I had the honor of presenting the Air Medal to the four crew members that executed this heroic rescue. Bravo Zulu to Lieutenant Commander Michael Haas, Lieutenant Commander Scott Woodcock, Aviation Maintenance Technician Second Class Andrew Thomas, and Aviation Survival Technician First Class Shane Moore for their courageous life-saving efforts!
In addition to honoring our current aviation crews, today, we celebrate the birthday of the Coast Guard’s first aviator, Commander Elmer Stone. Commander Elmer Stone, born on January 22, 1887, completed Naval Aviation Flight training in 1917, earning designation as Naval Aviator #38 and Coast Guard Aviator #1. Aviators across the Coast Guard are celebrating
#FlightSuitFriday today!
