The Shungnak solar energy project that allows the community to use less diesel and save money on energy was highlighted by the industry magazine this month as the microgrid project of the year.
Solar Builder magazine recognized the 225-kilowatt Shungnak Community Microgrid Solar Project, the battery system that allows Shungnak and a nearby Kobuk village to run diesel-off for most of the day in summer.
"This microgrid has been functioning for about a full year now, resulting in 15,360 gallons of diesel fuel the Shungnak community no longer needed," the Northwest Arctic Borough officials said. "That's a cost savings in the range of $125,000 to $135,000 for the year — savings that go directly back to the community."
