U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Nathan Moore, 17th District Commander, and Master Chief Phillip Waldron, the 17th District Command Master Chief, recently visited units in Sitka, Alaska, to help crews celebrate Alaska Day.
Annually recognized on October 18th, #AlaskaDay is the anniversary of the formal transfer of territories in present-day Alaska. In 1867, the U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million.
That year, the Revenue Cutter Lincoln transported the first U.S. flag, which was raised at Fort Sitka. Since then, the Coast Guard has maintained a presence throughout Alaska.
