Several buildings in Ambler will be heated with a local renewable energy source starting this season.
Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium completed in September the construction of the biomass heating system in Ambler. The system will be heating Ambler's administrative building, NANA building and the washeteria with the laundry facilities the entire community uses.
"The idea was cooked up by Northwest Arctic Borough in their energy program — they want to lower the cost of living," Karankevich said. "Instead of barging in or flying in their fuel and using that to heat or make electricity, you can take renewable energy and plant it there in communities."
