Opening day for the new school in Kivalina is getting closer, and parents and school officials are preparing methods of transportation for the students.
Students will be bused to and from the Kisimgiugtuq School, eight miles out of town, starting on Oct. 21, said Kathy Christy, the Northwest Arctic Borough School District's capital projects manager in an email. The new buses were barged into the village this summer.
"Some parents are getting trucks, now that we have some kind of road," said resident Janour Hawley, referring to the Kivalina evacuation road completed in 2021. "I hope they have good road maintenance. I worked on the road when building it during the winter and got stuck coming back to town because of winds and heavy snowfall."
