The Northwest Arctic Borough would like to inform residents that the communities of Kotzebue and Kivalina are in a coast flood warning. The community of Deering is in a coast flood advisory. The potential impacts to Kivalina, Kotzebue and Deering are as followed:
Kivalina: Water levels are around 4 feet above the normal highest tide line. The highest water levels are expected this afternoon then falling this evening, October 7, 2022. There will be strong southwest winds which will turn west and decrease this afternoon. Flooding is possible of the low lying areas along the lagoon on the northwest part of the village. Significant wave run-up will push water much higher up than normal along the beach which may result in erosion.
Kotzebue: Water levels are expected to be 3 to 4 feet above the normal highest tide line. The highest water levels are expected this after with water levels falling this evening, October 7, 2022. Strong southwest winds will turn west and decrease this afternoon. Flooding is expected around the lagoon, harbor, and teacher housing. Significant wave run-up will push water much higher up than normal along the beach which may result in erosion.
Deering: Water levels are expected to be 2 to 4 feet above the normal highest tide line. The highest water levels are expected this afternoon with water levels falling late tonight, October 7, 2022. Strong southwest winds will turn west and decrease this afternoon. Minor flooding is possible of the lowest lying areas along the coast. The road to the runway may be inundated with water.
