Whitefish, cranberries and wide grins: this is the harvest Selawik children brought home in September.
Selawik Davis-Ramoth Memorial School students of all ages enjoyed traditional fishing and berry picking activities this month during the three-week-long Selawik Science-Culture Camp, just a boat ride away from the village.
"It was really fun," a fifth grader Honey Sovak said. Learning to scale fish and looking at wildlife was her favorite part of the camp.
"We work on fish, we pick berries with the kids and spend time out on the tundra," said Brittany Sweeney, outreach specialist at the Selawik National Wildlife Refuge. "There are a lot of kids in Selawik, and some of them do get the chance to get out of the village and get out on the land, but for other kids, it might be their first boat ride of the year, or for some of the younger kids — their first boat ever."
