Massive Typhoon

A massive typhoon that battered Western Alaska over the weekend, for the most part, spared the Northwest Alaska communities. Still, residents living to the north of the storm epicenter in places such as Kotzebue and Kivalina did feel its effects.

"The storm did impact us in some ways, but nothing critical," Kotzebue City Manager Tom Atkinson said. "We don't seem to have any type of permanent damage that we know of yet. ... We fared much better than our neighbors to the south. And we certainly want to extend our thoughts and prayers to those folks who suffered much more extensive damage from the storm than we did."

In Kotzebue, the storm did not cause severe or permanent damage, but the flooding affected several homes, the harbor and a few roads.

In Kivalina, the water rose throughout the weekend, but by Monday, the ocean was calming down.

Kivalina prepared their community by moving rocks and bringing boulders from the airport to prevent houses such as the one of Elder Jerry Know from being flooded.
