The Northwest Arctic Borough would like to inform residents that we are in a coastal flood warning for the communities of Deering, Kivalina, and Kotzebue. The potential risk for each community is as follows:
Deering: Water levels 3-5 feet above the normal high tide line. The highest water levels will occur Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. There is expected to be south winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts of 65 mph winds. There is likely to be significant erosion. The NWAB and the incident command team is on standby.
Kivalina: Water levels of 5-7 feet above the highest normal highest tide line. The highest water levels will occur early Sunday morning. It is expected to have southeast winds at 45 miles with winds gusting of 65 mph. There is likely to be significant erosion. The NWAB and the incident command team is on standby.
Kotzebue: Water levels of 4-6 feet above normal high tide line. The highest water levels will occur early Sunday morning, but water will remain high throughout Sunday. There is expected to be winds of 35 to 45 mph gusting of up to 65 mph winds, with strongest winds to be Saturday morning. There is expected to be significant beach erosion. The City of Kotzebue and the incident command team is on standby. Cudd Hall will be open as an emergency shelter for those who are experiencing homelessness.
It is advised to shelter in place. To prepare for a storm please ensure that you have charged cell phones, emergency food and flashlights.
