From testing equipment that might go to Mars to testing materials to slow down permafrost thaw, scientists have been coming to the North Slope to do research for more than seven decades — and they don't plan to stop either.
"We've got archaeologists that are looking back into the past, we've got people looking into the future for climate change or space travel," said Terri Mitchell, general manager at UIC Science. "And we also have people looking at today right now: What is the planet look like? What is the baseline? So that w

More than 100 people — including Indigenous experts and scientists from all over the world — celebrated last week the 75-year anniversary of the Utqiagvik research facility, previously known as the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory. Started in the early 1940s and managed by the Navy until 1980s, NARL was transferred to Ukpeagvik Inupiat Corporation in 1984, becoming UIC Science - the company that supports Arctic research projects based out of Utqiagvik.
