Fairbanks North Star Borough issued the following announcement on March 9.
It’s the moment spring-break-skaters have been waiting for! Join Borough Mayor Bryce Ward, Chief of Staff Jim Williams and the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department, as we open the doors to the public at the North Pole Ice Rink! This celebratory, recreational skating event will take place on a BRAND-NEW sheet of ice just installed by Parks and Recreation staff at the covered rink next to North Pole High School. The Borough Parks and Recreation Department will manage and maintain this facility starting this spring. This opening event will take place on Tuesday, March 10th, 2020 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at 601 NPHS Boulevard, North Pole, AK 99705. The weather will still be cold so dress appropriately. Hot cocoa and cookies will be provided. This winter, the Parks and Recreation Department had some help from a group of very dedicated volunteers who worked to fix the facility and there is still have more work to do before next winter’s skating season. The outdoor rink is only open for recreational skating, as the facility is not yet suitable for hockey. Much thanks to the Central Labor Council and their dedicated group of volunteers, the City of North Pole, North Pole High School, Borough Mayor Ward, Chief of Staff Jim Williams and Parks and Recreation Staff.
